We are proud to recognize CASA Selina as our CASA of the Month for her unwavering dedication and deep compassion in supporting a youth in foster care, Kyle*, through one of the most challenging chapters of his life. Being a CASA for a child in crisis is never easy. These young people often feel disconnected, unseen, and unsupported by the individuals meant to protect them. Being a CASA in these moments isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about standing firm when things get tough, holding space for hope, and believing in a youth’s worth, even when they can’t see it themselves yet. CASA Selina has stepped into that space with strength, patience, and heart.
When CASA Selina first met 14-year-old Kyle, it was clear he was carrying a lifetime of pain, loss, and unmet needs. He was facing tremendous behavioral and emotional challenges, shaped by trauma, instability, and years of feeling like no one was truly in his corner. He struggled to remain in his placements and often left them for extended periods. These episodes have put him in dangerous situations, including altercations and accidents that have led to serious injury.
When Kyle was hospitalized following a traumatic incident, CASA Selina was there. Nearly every day, she visited him in the hospital, offering him not just companionship, but the simple reassurance that someone cared enough to keep showing up. One day, she brought him a T-shirt from the hospital gift shop, a small gesture with a big message. She told Kyle it symbolized what he had been through, how far he had come, and the potential still ahead of him. She encouraged him to use this moment as a turning point, to make choices that could keep him safe and allow him to grow into the bright future she knows is possible for him.
Throughout her time with Kyle, CASA Selina has established a relationship founded on trust and respect. Whether teaching him a card trick, sharing a meal, or just sitting and listening, she has remained a steady and positive adult in his life, something Kyle has had far too little of. Even when Kyle disappears for long stretches, missing scheduled visits, CASA Selina never gives up. Each time he returns, she shows up once again, ready to reconnect.
Now, slowly, there are signs of change. Kyle is beginning to understand that his foster placement isn’t a punishment. He’s learning, step by step, that he doesn’t have to run. For the first time, he is being given the support to make better decisions, re-engage in school, and start working toward the future so many believe he’s capable of. His teachers see his intelligence. His caregivers see his potential. And CASA Selina, she’s been the one to remind him of it, over and over again.
Kyle’s journey in foster care is still unfolding, but thanks to CASA Selina, he knows what it feels like to be consistently supported. She’s been his constant — a dependable presence in the midst of uncertainty, showing Kyle that he deserves someone who will show up — not just once, not just when it’s convenient, but every single time. Her presence is a powerful reminder to Kyle that even when life is hard, he is not forgotten. He is not alone. And he is never beyond hope.
