From 2004 until 2015, the Point Loma-based Makua served as a women’s auxiliary of Voices for Children and, through an annual fundraising event, raised more than $1,000,000 for VFC over 11 years. In 2015, the group shifted away from fundraising and towards volunteerism for Voices for Children. In addition to creating awareness in the community about the needs of foster children and how CASAs can change lives, Makua helps at the annual holiday event for foster children and their CASAs; in preparing backpacks for children going back to school in the fall; and in securing gift cards for children through the VFC Children’s Assistance Fund. For many years, Makua members made a difference in the lives of local children in need. As volunteers for Voices for Children, they continue this work and enjoy the camaraderie of others who have a desire to help children. For more information, contact membership@makua.org.
