Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers are everyday people doing extraordinary work. Appointed by judges to advocate for children who have experienced abuse or neglect, CASA volunteers get to know the child they serve and ensure their voices are heard in court, at school, and in every aspect of their lives. They often see things through a different lens—one that is grounded in consistency, trust, and genuine connection. Many times, they are the one adult who shows up simply because they care. They become a safe person—someone a child can count on, time and time again.
This is undoubtedly true for ten-year-old Jake*. Jake has faced more than his fair share of hardship. Removed from his parents’ care due to educational neglect and abandonment, he has grown up in a world marked by instability and uncertainty. But amid the chaos, one constant has emerged: his CASA, Bill.
From the very beginning of their relationship, CASA Bill has shown unwavering dedication to Jake. He drives over two hours each way just to spend time with him, never missing a visit, no matter the distance. But what truly sets Bill apart is the care, creativity, and consistency he brings to every interaction. Jake, a young boy who loves Minecraft, skateboarding, and playing at the park, lights up when he sees CASA Bill. Together, they’ve built routines and memories that bring joy and a sense of normalcy to Jake’s life. Whether they’re grabbing a bite at McDonald’s, practicing tricks at the skate park, racking up points at the arcade, or watching a movie, their time is rooted in trust, fun, and connection. Skateboarding has become more than a pastime—it’s a tool for building confidence and self-expression. Bill has supported Jake every step of the way, celebrating each achievement with pride.
CASA Bill’s advocacy extends far beyond outings. He has played a vital role in Jake’s education, ensuring that Jake receives the specialized speech therapy he needs, services that go beyond what his school offers. He’s pushed for an applied behavior analysis assessment to better support Jake’s emotional and behavioral challenges and advocated for at-home tutoring to help Jake catch up academically after a year of limited school attendance.
When it comes to Jake’s long-term stability, CASA Bill’s voice has been just as crucial. He has championed adoption as the most suitable permanency plan and emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong connection with Jake’s sister. Recognizing Jake’s mentions of older siblings, Bill also recommended a Family Connections referral to identify relatives who may be part of Jake’s support system.
Perhaps one of the most profound affirmations of CASA Bill’s impact came during a recent child and family team meeting. As professionals voiced serious concerns about Jake’s behaviors — including outbursts and aggression— CASA Bill offered a different perspective. He calmly shared that when Jake is with him, there are no behaviors. He’s respectful, relaxed, and fully engaged. That moment made it undeniably clear: Jake feels safe with Bill in a way he hasn’t been able to with anyone else. CASA Bill’s role may be different from that of a teacher, therapist, or case manager, but it is just as vital. He is Jake’s safe person. The one who shows up. The one who listens. The one who believes in him. For his consistency, creativity, and deep compassion, we are proud to honor CASA Bill as our CASA of the Month.
