The foster care system comprises a dedicated network of professionals, including social workers, attorneys, and judges, who work to support youth in foster care. Because these professionals manage many complex cases, a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) plays a unique and vital role alongside them. A CASA is a trained volunteer appointed by a judge to guide and advocate for a youth’s specific needs on an individual level. By focusing on just one child or sibling group, a CASA works collaboratively with the youth’s case professionals to ensure their voice is amplified and their day-to-day well-being remains front and center. Since December 2025, CASA Marla has been doing exactly that for 15-year-old Kathi*.
When Kathi was moved to a new placement this past May, the very final month of the school year, she faced the challenge of changing homes, neighborhoods, and schools all at once. Kathi explicitly shared her hope to finish out the term in the environment where she felt safe and comfortable, rather than navigating the stress of a brand-new school just weeks before summer break. Knowing how important this continuity was for Kathi’s education and well-being, CASA Marla immediately sprang into action to support her case youth’s wishes.
Securing long-term transportation during a sudden placement change takes time. While Kathi’s Social Services Practitioner (SSP) worked hard to arrange ongoing services and her caregiver coordinated additional logistics, CASA Marla stepped in to provide transportation to and from school one to two times a week. Those car rides became an anchor. Through simple, everyday interactions during school drop-offs and pick-ups, CASA Marla provided a steady, caring presence. She offered encouragement when Kathi needed it most, proving to her that she had someone firmly in her corner.
It wasn’t just about driving from point A to point B; it was about protecting Kathi’s right to stability. Thanks to CASA Marla’s dedication, Kathi didn’t have to say an abrupt goodbye to her friends. She successfully and proudly finished the school year at her preferred school. While Kathi knows that the upcoming school year will bring a necessary transition to a new school closer to her placement, CASA Marla’s support has left a lasting impression.
