Sibling relationships are often the longest-lasting connections in a child’s life. For youth in foster care, maintaining that bond can be a critical source of stability, comfort, and identity. When families are separated due to abuse or neglect, siblings are sometimes placed in different homes or settings, further compounding the trauma they’ve experienced. CASA volunteers who step up to advocate for sibling groups play a vital role in helping preserve these connections, ensuring siblings not only stay together when possible but also receive the holistic support they need to heal together. This month, we are proud to recognize CASA Leslie as our Riverside County CASA of the Month for her extraordinary commitment to a sibling group of four: Adam*, Mandi*, Alison*, and Violet*.
The four siblings entered foster care after experiencing significant neglect and living in an environment that was unsafe and unable to support their development. Understandably, they faced both academic and social delays and needed extra support to begin healing from the trauma they had endured. Although this was Leslie’s very first case as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), she welcomed all four children with compassion and an open heart. Her gentle persistence and steady support have been a constant source of encouragement for the children. Over time, CASA Leslie has taken great care to get to know each child and what brings them joy. Adam is an inquisitive boy who enjoys exploring and building in Minecraft. Mandi has a special talent for art and loves to express herself through drawing. The younger sisters, Alison and Violet, are full of energy and happiness when they dance. Thanks to CASA Leslie’s thoughtful advocacy, these children are beginning to discover their strengths and find their voices.
When the children were enrolled in school, they began to struggle academically, requiring individualized support and flexible learning environments. CASA Leslie quickly stepped in, establishing communication with school staff and advocating for additional supports. At the time, only speech therapy services were put in place, far from adequate considering the children’s significant needs. Although CASA Leslie did not initially hold educational rights, she refused to let that stop her. She continuously collaborated with school professionals, pushed through challenges and resistance, and fought to ensure the children were given the needed support. Her dedication led to a major milestone— CASA Leslie was recently granted co-educational rights after months of effort, and she is now actively working with the school team to secure appropriate and individualized services for each child.
Beyond academics, CASA Leslie goes out of her way to bring joy and new experiences to the children, organizing outings like bowling and introducing them to activities they had never experienced before. These moments not only create happy memories but also help strengthen their sibling bond and support their emotional healing.
CASA Leslie’s work is a powerful example of what CASA advocacy can look like when grounded in compassion, consistency, and a deep belief in the potential of every child. Her unwavering support has made a meaningful difference in the lives of Adam, Mandi, Alison, and Violet, allowing them to stay together and have someone they trust by their side as they face the next steps in their lives.
