CASA Lindsey eagerly began her role as a CASA last year, when she was assigned to a 17-year-old youth, Kira*. Despite her initial nerves, CASA Lindsey dove into her role and has become her youth’s strongest ally, collaborating with Kira’s ever-changing team and supporting her as she inches closer to adulthood.
During her time in foster care, Kira has found it extremely difficult to adjust. But when CASA Lindsey first visited, she and Kira hit it off – and in Lindsey, Kira found someone she could trust. During their time together, Kira opened up about many different things, including the fact that she has had unmet medical needs. CASA Lindsey made sure the youth was able to attend an important medical appointment that had previously been missed. At that visit, doctors uncovered serious health concerns that required immediate hospitalization. Without hesitation, the CASA stayed by the youth’s side – asking questions, gathering information, and simply being there during a frightening and overwhelming moment.
In the weeks that followed, CASA Lindsey showed up to every Child and Family Team meeting, making sure the youth’s voice was heard and their needs were clearly understood. When it became clear that a change in placement would be necessary due to medical needs, CASA Lindsey was there to help the youth process the news. Through all of Kira’s challenges, one thing has stayed constant – the bond with her CASA. In moments of uncertainty, CASA Lindsey is her first call, a trusted adult who listens, advocates, and stays.
