Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Kathy recently marked four years of unwavering advocacy. When CASA Kathy was matched with Matt*, he had recently entered the dependency system after his caregiver expressed they could no longer meet the youth’s significant behavioral and mental health needs.
As a new CASA, Kathy was still learning the ropes and figuring out how to connect with a youth who had every reason to keep his guard up. In an early meeting with her Voices for Children Advocacy Supervisor, Kathy admitted it had been tough to form a bond. Matt was withdrawn, communication was limited, and the warm, trusting bond she’d heard others describe with their CASA youth just wasn’t there… yet. But she knew simply being there could make all of the difference.
Kathy showed up consistently, listened patiently, and stayed present through all of Matt’s challenges. And with that, Matt started to trust her. Today, he opens up to her about his struggles, turning to her when things get tough.
Matt’s case continues to evolve. But through it all, CASA Kathy remains a steady, reliable advocate, tenacious, compassionate, and always ready to show up. No matter what. She is quick to ask questions and has a go-getter attitude. CASA Kathy is always up for a challenge, and is dedicated to staying on top of everything as it relates to her youth’s case. No matter what, CASA Kathy can be relied on to be a steadfast advocate through it all.

Favorite thing about being a CASA: “I have really enjoyed getting to know my case youth, and watching him grow from a shy, anxious boy into a confident, caring teenager. I am inspired by his resilience and his ability to meet challenges head-on with a positive attitude. Additionally, I am honored to work with so many other professionals in my child’s life, such as social workers, teachers, therapists, counselors, and attorneys who have dedicated their lives to helping children and have taught me so much about the value of service.”
