At Voices for Children, powerful advocacy not only supports the child but also uplifts the entire family system. CASA Bart exemplifies that philosophy—and we’re proud to recognize him as our CASA of the Month for his outstanding dedication, compassion, and persistent advocacy on behalf of 17-year-old Derrick* and his family.
Assigned to Derrick last year, CASA Bart quickly recognized that advocating for him would mean advocating for more than just services—it would mean supporting the stability and well-being of Derrick’s entire home environment. Derrick is neurodivergent, mostly non-verbal, and cannot be left alone. He is supported by a regional developmental services agency and lives at home under a family maintenance plan with his single mother, who is both his sole caregiver and the family’s primary income earner.
Although Derrick’s mother has worked tirelessly to meet his needs, CASA Bart observed that the continuous demands of caregiving were taking a visible toll. Recognizing this, he redirected his advocacy efforts to address the bigger picture: securing in-home support services that would provide not only care for Derrick but also critical respite for his mother. CASA Bart collaborated with Derrick’s social worker, engaging in multiple conversations to identify resources and ensure follow-through. Their persistence paid off—by April 2025, they had successfully connected the family with an appropriate home healthcare provider, well-equipped to support Derrick’s needs.
Shortly afterward, a representative from the home healthcare provider reached out to CASA Bart’s Advocacy Supervisor to express their appreciation. They praised CASA Bart’s professionalism and determination, crediting his involvement as a key reason the family was able to access care through the regional services agency. This care is expected to continue beyond the family’s time in dependency, which is an enormous relief for Derrick’s mother and a testament to CASA Bart’s impact.
In addition to his advocacy, CASA Bart has formed a personal, meaningful connection with Derrick. They spend one-on-one time together, usually after school in the afternoons. Their outings have included trips to the park, library, zoo, and movies. But Derrick’s favorite activity by far is riding the trolley, often topped off with chicken nuggets from McDonald’s, his favorite treat. With guidance from Derrick’s school speech therapist, CASA Bart has learned to encourage communication through Derrick’s tablet and continues to support him in expressing himself in any way he can. Over time, Derrick has come to recognize CASA Bart when he arrives and even identifies his car in the parking lot. As their relationship has grown, so too has their communication and mutual understanding. Today, Derrick approaches their visits with a calm and cheerful attitude, and Bart describes their time together as deeply rewarding.
Because of CASA Bart’s careful observation, thoughtful advocacy, and genuine relationship-building, Derrick and his mother now have support that can sustain them well beyond the dependency system. His ability to navigate complex situations while centering the needs and voices of the children he serves is nothing short of inspiring. CASA Bart’s work exemplifies what it truly means to be a CASA: showing up, listening deeply, and acting with purpose.
