San Diego County CASA of the Month – October 2026

Become a CASA Today

In 2025, shortly after graduating Voices for Children’s Advocate University (AU), CASA Stephanie was assigned to Nora’s* case. Ready to advocate, she hit the ground running. CASA Stephanie reached out to all the professionals on the case and after being unable to connect with Nora, she took the initiative to attend a weekly informal meeting with Nora’s team within the first week of being assigned; however, Nora did not attend. Once CASA Stephanie and Nora were finally able to connect, they started meeting weekly.

There have been many ups and downs in a short amount of time, including an occasion when Nora was frustrated after a hearing and told CASA Stephanie that she never wanted to see her again. To which CASA Stephanie replied, “Too bad; I am your CASA, and I am not going anywhere.”

Throughout these challenges, CASA Stephanie has remained a trusted adult in Nora’s life. She adjusted her work schedule so she could attend an important hearing and even wore pink heels as a sweet gesture of support as pink is Nora’s favorite color. At the hearing, the Court approved a special same-day visit between them. Nora loved the pink heels, but CASA Stephanie learned that open-toed shoes were not permitted at their visitation location. She quickly purchased a pair of closed-toed shoes nearby and returned for their visit.

CASA Stephanie and Nora spent their time playing cards and reconnecting. During their time together, CASA Stephanie reassured Nora that she would continue to be there for her. Through her consistency and care, CASA Stephanie continues to show Nora that she is supported and does not have to face difficult moments alone.

Favorite part of being a CASA: “Being involved. Being involved means an opportunity for continuous learning, being around inspiring professionals and bringing moments of joy to a youth’s day. There is a huge social advocacy and resource community in San Diego County doing incredible work on the behalf of children and families that I really knew nothing about. Being able to say thank you to those working hard on our youth’s behalf, playing a game of supersized UNO that lasts over an hour, tracking down prescription glasses to help make studying easier or having a Judge congratulate the youth on record for a 90% on a test – these are special moments and it’s nice to be part a process which is geared towards lifting people up.”

You can be the steady, caring presence a young person living in foster care needs. CASA volunteers help youth feel grounded through life’s most difficult transitions, offering guidance, encouragement, and someone they can count on. If you’re ready to stand beside a child and help them move toward a brighter future, learn more about becoming a CASA volunteer today.
