Being a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) isn’t always about milestone moments. It can often involve small moments that add up over time to make a difference in the life of a child in foster care.
Since joining our CASA program four and a half years ago, Dave B. has been an exemplary volunteer. He never misses a meeting or hearing, always submits court reports on time, and holds educational rights for his case youth. On top of this important advocacy, the small, thoughtful ways he supports youth make him truly stand out.
On his first case, Dave and his case youth loved talking about cars together, so he gave him a small model car for his birthday. The youth told him that he had never received a birthday gift before and that it was his most special possession. Once, when the child was having a rough day, Dave drove from Oceanside to Chula Vista in rush hour traffic just to bring him his favorite treat: strawberry milk.
On his second case, the youth was moved to a placement in San Bernardino County. Despite the distance, Dave made the drive once a month so the boy would know that there was an adult in his life he could count on.
Dave is so passionate about being a CASA that he helps us train new volunteers during Advocate University training. We can’t think of a better person to make a new CASA feel excited, inspired, and motivated to start their journey.
