CASA of the Month – January 2022

  • January 27, 2022
  • Voices For Children

At 21, Amber is one of our youngest Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers. In her short time as a CASA, she has made a difference in the life of her case child and made the holidays brighter for dozens of other children in local foster care.

“William” entered foster care last spring after it was reported that his mother was under the influence and acting erratically in his presence. The boy was just 10 months old and classified as medically fragile.

As soon as she was assigned to William, CASA Amber learned everything she could about his case. She researched activities, books, and toys that would enhance his development and started forming a strong relationship with his caregiver. Once a month, Amber drives an hour each way to spend time with William.

Although Amber can’t interact with 1-year-old William in the same way as an older child, she discovered unique ways to bond with him. For example, she found a face mask with his favorite characters on it that she wears during her visits.

“I bring a few toys and books with me on my visit, and he loves opening up the toy bag each time to see what’s inside,” Amber shared.

In addition to being a dedicated CASA, Amber is currently a senior at San Diego State University majoring in business. However, she still found time to plan and coordinate our holiday pajama drive. Amber collected nearly 300 new pairs of pajamas for youth in foster care, ranging in size from infant to adult. She also donated her time on the day of the drive, helping other CASA volunteers chose the perfect pajamas for their case youth.
