A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) often becomes the most consistent adult in the life of a child in foster care. For 11-year-old “Leah,” her CASA has been the only consistent adult in her life.
CASA Ellie joined our Riverside County program in 2020 and was soon assigned to Leah’s case. Ellie learned that Leah had no reliable family support and when a family member would surface, they wouldn’t stay in the picture long. Ellie wanted Leah to know that she would always be there for her.
For the last year and a half, Ellie has visited Leah every other week, spending time at the group home where Leah lives and sharing new experiences together. (Her advocacy supervisor shared that Ellie never misses a visit!) Recently, an out-of-state relative planned to visit Leah for her birthday. Unfortunately, the trip fell through, and Leah was heartbroken. Determined to lift her spirits, CASA Ellie took Leah on a special birthday outing and turned a disappointing day into a happy one.
CASA Ellie has become a vital part of Leah’s support team. For example, the therapist and case manager at the group home often look to Ellie for advice when making decisions about Leah. Leah is receiving better, more personalized care thanks to input from her CASA.
“I tell my family and friends that being a CASA is one of the most important and rewarding things that I have ever done in my life,” Ellie said.
