Riverside County CASA of the Month – February 2023

February 27, 2023 by Voices for Children

Congratulations to our Riverside County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer of the month, Shelly! Since joining Voices for Children (VFC) four years ago, CASA Shelly has advocated for five youth in foster care and made a profound difference in each of their lives.

“CASA Shelly gives her all to advocate for whatever the youth needs and does not give up until that need is met,” shared Marsha, CASA Shelly’s advocacy supervisor at VFC.

A few examples include:

  • Helping guide a teenager successfully into adulthood
  • Helping a struggling family in family maintenance receive family therapy to enable their success
  • Always being there for her case youth through thick and thin

“CASA Shelly is a role model for what a CASA can do for a youth and for the youth’s family. I cannot express how much Shelly deserves this recognition,” Marsha continued.

Before moving to Menifee, CASA Shelly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. This past Veterans Day, she was featured in Valley News and encouraged other veterans to consider becoming a CASA volunteer.

“The military considers community service as a way of thanking the communities where we reside,” CASA Shelly explained. “It’s important to understand the dynamics of the communities you patronize to understand where resources are needed the most.”

County: Riverside

Became a CASA: 2019

Occupation: Record and Information Management

Favorite Quote: “Put your pride aside. Try it. If it doesn’t fair out, you know it’s not for you.  Never live with, ‘I wish, I could’ve, should’ve, would’ve.’ Just do it. Live life not in life.” –Shelly’s Father

You, too, can make a difference in the life of youth in foster care. Learn more about becoming a CASA volunteer.
