Riverside County – CASA of the Month – May 2023

May 22, 2023 by Voices for Children

In a world where consistency, empathy, and unwavering support make all the difference, CASA Sue has emerged as a shining example of a dedicated Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Her remarkable advocacy has positively impacted the life of a teen, *Mary, guiding her through the ups and downs, challenges, and bright spots.

With a career spanning over 38 years as a registered nurse in outpatient surgery, CASA Sue has dedicated her life to caring for others. After retiring, she embarked on a new journey as a CASA in February 2019. Sue’s extensive experience in the healthcare field equipped her with empathy, patience, and a deep understanding of the importance of being supportive and helping people.

Consistency has been a key component of CASA Sue advocacy. Sue’s dedication has shown Mary that she has someone dependable in her corner, someone who will stand by her no matter what.

Sue’s Advocacy Supervisor, Marsha, highlights the profound impact Sue has had on Mary’s life. Through both good and challenging times, Sue has been a steadfast presence. When Mary felt isolated due to a strained relationship with her sister, Sue was there to provide comfort and support. Celebrating birthdays, planning prom, and being there for everyday happenings, Sue has embraced the joys of case child’ life. These shared experiences have created lasting memories for the Mary.

As Mary approaches the cusp of young adulthood and prepares to become a Non-Minor Dependent (NMD), CASA Sue’s ability to adapt to Mary’s changing needs while keeping the door open for deep conversations demonstrates her exceptional understanding and sensitivity. Sue journey as a CASA embodies the spirit of volunteerism and the transformative power of consistent support. Her dedication to Mary’s growth and well-being, alongside her unwavering presence, has made a profound impact on a vulnerable youth’s life.

Favorite part of being a CASA: “My absolute favorite part about being a CASA has been observing my [assigned youth] navigate life. She has faced many obstacles and challenges and has had just as many successes! She has become a confident and beautiful young lady. I am honored to be a part of her life.”

Favorite quote: “Children are our most valuable resources.” -Herbert Hoover

You, too, can make a difference in the life of youth in foster care. Learn more about becoming a CASA volunteer.
