San Diego County CASA of the Month – March 2025

  • March 19, 2025
  • Olivia Chavez

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers play a vital role in helping children through the reunification process. They often act as a bridge between the child’s biological family, the caregivers, social workers, and other professionals involved in the case. By communicating effectively and observing how the child copes with the reunification process, CASA volunteers can provide feedback and help address any concerns. In Sadie’s* case, CASA Hailey has facilitated communication between all parties involved, advocated for Sadie’s needs, and ensured that her safety and well-being remained the top priority.

CASA Hailey first met Sadie when she was just 3 years old. Sadie had already been through more than most children her age. Her biological parents were battling addiction, and her older siblings had previously entered foster care in 2014, which resulted in legal guardianship. Despite her tumultuous start in life, CASA Hailey quickly established a strong, trust-based relationship with Sadie, earning the affectionate nickname of “the bubble CASA” for her thoughtful gesture of bringing bubbles to every visit, which always brought a sense of lightness and fun to Sadie’s day.

As time passed, Sadie’s caregivers expressed concerns about her visits with her biological parents. In response, CASA Hailey took a proactive role in understanding and addressing these concerns. She maintained open communication with the social worker, Sadie’s therapist, the biological parents, and the caregivers. CASA Hailey also observed several visits between Sadie and her parents, paying close attention to how Sadie was affected both during and after the visits. Through her diligent observations, CASA Hailey was able to mediate conversations and offer her insights, ensuring that everyone’s perspective was taken into account.

Sadie’s biological parents were committed to completing their reunification services, like participating in counseling, parent education classes, and drug treatment and testing services to regain custody of Sadie. Recently, she was reunified with her biological parents under family maintenance, a big step forward in Sadie’s journey. Understanding that reunification is a process that can include many changes and adjustments for a child, CASA Hailey continues to provide support to Sadie and her family. She makes regular visits to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible and that her medical, emotional, and educational needs are being met.

A particularly special moment came during the Voices for Children holiday party. Watching Sadie take on the role of a “big girl” as she confidently ordered her own food was a heartwarming sight for CASA Hailey. However, during their drive home, Sadie expressed that she missed her previous caregivers and wanted to see them. Understanding the importance of maintaining these connections, CASA Hailey began working with Sadie’s parents and the social worker to explore the possibility of arranging a visit for Sadie to reconnect with the caregivers she had lived with for over a year. CASA Hailey’s efforts and empathy made Sadie’s parents and caregivers feel heard while helping them build a good relational connection.

Today, Sadie is an energetic, smart, and confident 4-year-old. She is thriving living with her parents, enjoying preschool, and spending time with her older siblings, who visit often. But this success didn’t happen overnight—it was the result of CASA Hailey’s dedication and her ability to help create a comprehensive support system. The bonds that Sadie shares with her biological family and caregivers are a testament to CASA Hailey’s role in facilitating those connections. These relationships are vital for Sadie’s future and will continue to be a source of strength as she faces new challenges.

As CASA Hailey reflects on her role in Sadie’s life, she remains hopeful for her future. Her dedication as a CASA volunteer was not just about helping Sadie through a difficult time—it was about ensuring that she has the foundation she needs to thrive as she grows up. Sadie’s journey with CASA Hailey is a powerful illustration of how CASA volunteers make a lasting difference in the lives of children navigating the foster care system. Through their advocacy, communication, and support, they help build strong connections for children to flourish, empowering them to achieve their full potential.
