Voices for Children Only San Diego Nonprofit and One of Only Two in State Named “Best Nonprofit to Work For” by National Group

February 15, 2012 by Olivia Chavez

(February 15, 2012) San Diego, CA – Voices for Children (VFC) is a private, nonprofit organization that has served abused children in San Diego County foster care for 32 years by providing volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) to ensure the children’s needs are met in the courtroom, classroom, and in the community.

Today, Voices for Children learned that is it a recipient of the “Best Non-profit to Work For” Award from Opportunity Knocks, a national organization committed to leading efforts that help further nonprofit careers and promote a robust nonprofit workforce. Voices for Children is one of only 15 organizations nationally to receive the award, the only recipient in Southern California, and one of only two California nonprofits honored.

Winners were selected based on employee-submitted essays on why they consider their organization to be a great place to work, and various factors including quality of life/work balance, the organization’s adherence to its mission, camaraderie of employees, unique benefits, training programs, and career paths.

Sharon M. Lawrence, Esq., President/CEO of Voices for Children, announced that the winning nomination was submitted by one of VFC’s Advocacy Managers, whose essay highlighted the staff’s shared passion for the organization’s mission, the organizational benefits that rival private-sector corporations, VFC’s dedication to serving our community’s disadvantaged youth, and the enthusiasm of the 800 volunteer advocates who are the core of the agency. Below is an excerpt from the essay:

Voices for Children encourages employees to get to know each other, to support one another during stressful times, and to recognize each colleague’s unique contributions. Managers understand and develop each employee’s professional goals and to recognize employees in ways that are individually meaningful. Challenged by our work, the staff strives for continual improvement and cultivates professionalism to a degree that is rare in non-profits.

Regarding the award, Karen Beavor, President and CEO of Opportunity Knocks stated, “We celebrate the rewards of working in the nonprofit sector by honoring those organizations that do it best. Our annual Best Nonprofit To Work For Awards provide nonprofit professionals a platform to give recognition to the organizations providing top quality work environments for people doing ‘jobs that change the world.'” To view all of the winners, visit www.opportunityknocks.org
